So, I’m doing my usual ‘find some inspiration’ Instagram surfing and I scroll across The Seven Cardinal Rules of Life. Cardinal, for those of you who may not know, means fundamental. So with that, I think the rules described in the Instaquote pictured above are great but–as you may have expected–I definitely have a few things I’d like to contribute to them.
1) MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR PAST so it won’t disturb your present.
I agree with this being a cardinal rule of life. If you can’t face your past, you’ll never be able to fully embrace your future. One of the reasons I live such a fulfilling life is because I am completely at terms with the things that make up my past. Honestly, I value my past very much. Make sure you’re recognizing that it says “make peace” not “forget” about your past. I believe forgetting about your past is equivalent to running from your past. Make peace with what you’ve made it out of in life–that’s all the bad experiences, bad decisions, mistakes–all of that. Take it with a grain of salt if necessary, but accept it and MOVE FORWARD.
2) WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OF YOU is none of your business.
Now, would I consider this rule to be one of the most important rules of life? Probably not–well not worded this way, anyway. Straying away from the obvious negative approach to ‘what a person thinks of you’, it is TOTALLY your business what other people think of you because you should carry yourself in the manner you wish to be treated in. I do everything I can to bring positivity with me everywhere I go and to practice goodness in all that I do in my life. So, rightfully so, most people have a very positive outlook on who I am as a person. If you think with this mindset, I think you may agree with me that instead of wording it the way they have here, I’d say a cardinal rule of life is remember that you can positively influence what people think of you. Those who chose to view you negatively are dealing with monsters within their own lives. Accept them with kindness still and be good to all.
3) TIME HEALS ALMOST EVERYTHING. Give it time.
Here’s another rule I’d put in the ‘very important’ rules of life category. Time does heal all in my eyes, but I think more than time, we need to remember that GOD HEALS ALL. If you give your burdens to the Lord and take time to listen to what He has to say to you and give yourself time to get closer to Him and stronger in Him, you’ll find a peace that, indeed, passes all understanding.
4) NO ONE IS IN CHARGE of your happiness. Except you.
Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! I love this one. I’m always encouraging you to follow your dreams. I’m always encouraging you to do what makes you happy. This is why. You have complete reign over the divine happiness that you’re capable of having in your life. Find out what makes you happy and do as much of it as possible (except bad things–like drugs). Ha. Keep your spirits lifted and your energy in a positive state at ALL TIMES. That is so important. Don’t let anyone rain on your parade. Don’t confuse this as me saying don’t listen to anyone’s words of advice to you. Always hear people out and consider what it is they may be trying to communicate with you. Think it through and then make the best decision for yourself.
5) DON’T COMPARE YOUR LIFE TO OTHERS and don’t judge them, you have no idea what their journey is all about.
Prayerfully, this is something you already know. We all have a story. Never judge the book by it’s cover or even the front and back panel for that matter. What I mean by that is, just because you’ve heard a few pieces of the story, don’t think you know the story in it’s entirety. Ultimately, if we all remember to leave the judging to the Good Lord, we might all find that everyone is just like us. Human. They’ve done some good things, some bad things, some stupid things, and it more than likely won’t be the last time. Still they deserve to be loved and appreciated just as we desire to be. Also, don’t ever mock yourself by comparing your life to that of another persons. I’ve never understood why we feel like that is a good idea. What’s funny about that is for most of us, if we actually did switch lives with someone for even a week, we’d be wishing we could have our own life back. Be thankful for the life you’re living and if you don’t like what that looks or feels like, change it.
6) STOP THINKING TOO MUCH. It’s alright not to know the answers. They will come to you when you least expect it.
Again, it’s not that I don’t agree with this being among the very important rules of life, but moreso recognizing–yes, it is okay not to know the answers and yes they’ll come to you when you least expect it–but [for me personally] the second part to remember is that my answers will come from God when I’m ready to accept them from Him. That means keeping my heart and mind clear, clean, and healthy and giving him the things He needs from me so that when He is giving me answers, I can actually hear and understand them. If you’re not religious, that’s fine… that’s the beauty of personal choice, ultimately with or without religion being included, I agree we all should stop thinking too much. That hasn’t done anybody too much good I’m sure.
7) SMILE. You don’t own all the problems in the world.
I couldn’t say it better myself. It immediately made me think of one song and I think it ‘s the perfect song to end this here entry with.
When all else fails…
Peace and love, dear reader.
