The past couple weeks have been extremely overwhelming for me–for a number of different reasons. Ultimately, it left me feeling a bit defeated, which I must say, doesn’t happen often. I felt weak, unsupported, and ready to give up–just typing the very words seem to be unreal–nevertheless, I cannot deny that it is true. Over the past two weeks, I have had no other choice but to comfort myself and I thought, “why not share this with others?” It isn’t the typical piece that I would write, but still I feel it is worth sharing. Here are 5 ways to comfort yourself when you’re feeling down.
Don’t do anything.
Sometimes it’s best for you to do absolutely nothing in order to get yourself out of a frump. It means stop what you’re doing, put everything down, and just breathe for a little while. Give yourself time to gather your thoughts and allow your mind to free itself. This allows most of the negativity to escape from your body.
Buy yourself something.
Whether it’s the pint of ice cream you kept telling yourself you weren’t going to get or the $300 camera you wanted, buy yourself something that will make you glad you bought it and even better when you use it. It’s bound to pull you out of the emotional frump you were in.
Organize and/or redecorate something.
This always works for me. When you organize and/or redecorate you allow your mind to be consumed by something other than the things that are bothering you. I usually do this while simultaneously listening to music. By the time I am finished, I am thrilled at the outcome and feeling much better than I did when I started.
Acknowledge your feelings.
It’s important to remember to actually acknowledge the way you are feeling in order to cope with the feelings you are having. If you’re mad, allow yourself to realize that so that you can then focus on what it is that is making you mad (as you would with any other emotions you are battling with).
It’s necessary and it’s human. A good cry goes a long way.
