Stop Letting Men Make You Their “Almost” Girl
From TV screens to real life, we all recognize the storyline: a strong, beautiful woman gets her heart broken by the man who swears he’s “not ready for a relationship.” I used to want to write letters to that man—the one who plays boyfriend until commitment enters the room—but the truth is, he’s not the one who needs the message.
I want to talk to the women who keep choosing him. The women who keep giving their heart to men who only offer almost. The women who know better, but hope anyway.
Before anything else, let me say this:
- Your heartbreak is not entirely your fault.
- Almost every woman you admire has been exactly where you are.
So no, I’m not here to drag you. I’m here to remind you of your power. Because if he isn’t ready to make you his woman, then he’s not your man—no matter how badly you want him to be. And it’s time to say it with your chest: I’m not going to be your almost girl.
Here’s where women get caught up. We start performing. We start proving. We start pouring ourselves into a man we hope will choose us. We think if we show him how loyal, nurturing, supportive, and “wife-like” we are, he’ll wake up one day and decide we’re worth committing to.
But let me tell you something I learned the hard way—and something every honest man will confirm: men commit because they want to, not because you earned it.
There’s a reason he gave the next woman the relationship he wouldn’t give you. And the truth may sound harsh, but it’s simple: he wanted to give it to her. I’ll never forget how flabbergasted I was when my best friend broke that down for me. He said, there are usually contributing factors, but very rarely does a man choose another girl because of how “you” she isn’t. It’s not because she’s prettier than you. It’s not because she cooks better than you.
It’s a shift. A feeling. A readiness. A desire to be better for her specifically. Commitment is not a prize you win—it’s a choice he makes.
And while that truth stings, accepting it frees you. It stops you from asking, “Why wasn’t I enough?” and helps you see the real question: “Why did I settle for almost?”
This is why clarity matters. Stop acting like a girlfriend to a man who won’t call you one. Stop giving wife energy to a man who can’t even tell you what he wants. Protect your heart with boundaries, not hope.
And no—I’m not saying demand a relationship after one date. But act according to the stage you’re in. In the beginning, keep things light—I’ll be addressing this specifically in the next piece. Go out. Get dressed. Have experiences. I don’t recommend spending the night, but if you do, be a guest—don’t start playing house. That’s how you slide into girlfriend behavior without the title.
When things start progressing, ask for clarity and keep those boundaries intact! And here’s a tip: If you have to ask “What are we?”, that’s at least half of your answer right there. A man who wants you makes it known. An unsure man keeps you confused.
When it’s time to talk exclusivity, do it with confidence. You’re not begging. You’re stating your standard. If he says no, don’t shrink. Don’t spiral. Don’t internalize it. You are enough—and the right man will never make you question that. He won’t hesitate. He won’t breadcrumb you. And he damn sure won’t let you be an almost girl.
